My First New York Fashion Week

I've just returned from my first ever NYFW, having attended a few shows as part of New York Fashion Week, New York Fashion Week Men's, and Style Fashion Week for the Fall/WInter 2018  on behalf of Fashion Fix Daily, where I work as a staff writer and editorial assistant. It was an incredible experience that I am still buzzing from, so I thought I'd do a little roundup of the iconic week here on Urbanity.

The Shows

Some of the brilliant collections I was lucky enough to see the debut of on the runways and presentation spaces at NYFW included:

Sanchez Kane | A menswear label by Mexican designer Barbara Sanchez-Kane Luar | A contemporary fashion brand by the co-founder of Hood by Air, Raul Lopez Moon Choi | A men's and women's tailoring brand based in South Korea and New York City Li-Ning | An established Chinese sportswear and streetwear label Malan Breton | A Taiwanese-American fashion designer and Porject Runway alumni Just In XX | A new womenswearlabel by 'Just In Case' founder Justin, Yu-Ying Chou.

How to get tickets to New York Fashion Week

The truth is, fashion weeks, no matter what the city, don't like bloggers. So, how do we, as bloggers get around this unspoken rule? Apply as press of course! I got access to the NYFW main showrooms etc by applying for a press pass, but as all fashion week rookies know, a press pass means absolutely zilch unless you have those PR contacts, baby.

Make sure to email both PR companies and brands directly for invites to fashion shows and presentations, and don't be scared to follow up after a week or so without a reply. Many invitations and passes are sent super last minute, so keep an eye on your email, and it’s handy to have a postal address prepped in the city too!

I also managed to blag my way into a few FROW seats and backtage areas by attending off-peak and emeging shows which weren't at capacity, swapping and sharing with other guests, and simply asking the organisers nicely by introducing who I am and what I can offer the brand by getting better access.

Even as a miniscule micro influencer like me, its totally possible to get tickets to New York Fashion Week, so don't give up; there are so many other ways to see the shows too if this method doesn't work at first, like buying tickets to certain public access shows, applying for internships at PR fiirms, brands, production and showrooms, offering to writre fashion week reviews for magazines and websites you like, and even just making friends with people in the industry to attend as their plus one or proxy!

NYFW highlights (and lowlights)

My top highlight was definitely the launch party for AGENT, a brand new NYC luxury menswear label. Hidden away down a street in Little Italy, the brand showcased their debut collection for a bustling crowd of industry admirers. I met so many wonderful people that night, including the co-founding designers designers, Terrence Williams and Joshua Fronda, and truly felt that New York was my spiritual fashion home. Plus, AGENT's A/W 18 offering was a treat for the senses, with texture taking the stage on a range of beautiful contemporary pieces for the modern capsule wardrobe, including luxurious wool coats, covetable leather and textile sneakers, and tactile ribbed jumpers to boot.

As LCD Soundsystem once sung, New York's the greatest if you find someone to pay the rent. Yup, the Big Apple is astonishingly expensive, especially as a fleeting tourist, so I would say that was my only downside, apart from waiting in queues outside venues in the bitter cold, but besides, when you're accustomed to London's £12 gin and tonics and unpredictable weather, nothing is that shocking during other fashion weeks anymore.

Overall at NYFW, I think it was a really successful season, with outstanding collections from Raf Simons, Alexander Wang, Victoria Beckham, Eckhaus Latta and Prabal Gurung. I follow all my fashion week coverage on SHOWstudio, WWD, BoF and Vogue Runway, and create/curate my own over on Fashion Fix Daily too.
